Statement by SYRIZA’s president Alexis Tsipras, concerning the visit of the delegation of the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON)

January 29, 2014

In regards to the visit of the delegation of the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), in the context of an inquiry of the European Parliament concerning the function and the outcomes of Troika’s implemented policies in member-states that are under fiscal adjustment program.

Two delegators of the European Parliament’s committee that investigates the role of troika in member-states under Memorandum are today in Athens.

The European Parliament, Europe’s most democratic institution has taken up a step that the Greek Parliament did not dare to. The governmental majority is responsible for that.

Unfortunately, on the account of the Greek Government, the European Parliament’s committee to Greece has been delayed.

Unfortunately the Government has rejected SYRIZA’s request for an in depth discussion between the European Parliament’s delegates and the Greek Parliament’s committees that are involved in the issue.

The presence of the committee in Greece should have been combined with the widest possible dialogue and a coordinated international effort by the Greek Government in order to expose and make all the aspects of the Greek humanitarian crisis known.

Also with the effort to present all the institutional anti-democratic diversions that took place in order to impose the devastating memorandum policies in our country.

Syriza wishes and seeks to shed light on the shameful background of the Memorandums and to demonstrate once more that the Memorandum policy is bankrupt.

We will use all our institutional capacities in order to contribute to the work of the two delegators in every possible way. For this reason:

During our recent visit to Strasbourg, we requested from them to extend the duration of their investigation. We also requested from them to disconnect the procedure from the context of the period prior to the European elections.

And also in order to expand their work we asked them to take the time to address every involved political or non-political person.

In order to facilitate their work, we handed them over the “Black Book” of the Memorandum, a study that we have conducted and which illustrates in detail the severity and extent of the humanitarian crisis that the neoliberal policies of the Memorandum have generated.

In addition we submitted several amendments to the draft Report that the two delegates have presented.

The government of Mr. Samaras is evidently trying its best to cover up the responsibilities for the tragedy that our country and people are living with.

Thus, the government is trying to downgrade and almost to obscure the inquiry that the European Parliament is conducting and the presence of the delegates in Greece.

However, soon, the next Parliament with Syriza’s majority will set up an examination committee which will examine the truth about the Memorandum and will make those responsible accountable.

ECON’s work will contribute essentially to this direction.

Our people have the right to know and we have the moral and political responsibility to restore the people’s right to information and knowledge.

And we will do it.
