Statement of the Political Secretariat of SYRIZA on the issue of Ukraine

February 27, 2014

A new wall is being built in Europe - The division of Ukraine, a country in the heart of Europe poses an acute danger for the world peace.

The Political Secretariat of SYRIZA yesterday (26th February) followed up on the previous Party statements regarding the situation in Ukraine

Ukraine is being destroyed as a state entity. The Ukrainian people are experiencing since several years now constant impoverishment, as a result of the policies of the corrupted and authoritarian regime of Janoekovitsj.  Now, EU and Washington encourage and aim at the destabilization of the country and at the same time they support directly and indirectly the neonazi and extremist groups, which are today negotiating powerful positions in the so-called "national unity government". The predominant states in the EU are encouraging neo-fascist forces and are not opposing the violent distraction of basic political and minority rights in Ukraine. This is a worrying and extreme escalation of the predominant EU forces' stance, as it has been manifested until now in the case of the undemocratic decisions in member states (Baltic States, Hungary etc) regarding the free operation of communist parties. Concurrently, this stance promotes the abolition of minority rights.

The latest developments in Ukraine open up the way for pillaging from imperialist forces and greedy financial interest, while the geopolitical and geostrategic contradictions pose huge dangers for peace in the heart of Europe.

The Political Secretariat of SYRIZA condemns the barbaric and murderous neonazi attacks against communists, jews and democratic citizens in the country and the distraction of minority schools, antifascist and historical monuments.  It also condemns the new laws which explicitly ban minority languages and rights, removing basic constitutional rights of Diaspora Greeks as well as Ukrainians of Greek origin.

We condemn the banning of the Communist party of Ukraine and the burning down of its offices in Kiev and in other cities as well as the pogrom and humiliation against its members and friends that has been unleashed.  All these acts present an extreme un-democratic aberration. We express, together with the left forces of Europe, our deep solidarity as well as our determination to take up every necessary initiative in Greece and Europe in order to safeguard the territorial integrity and peace in Ukraine, on the base of the principles of the UN charter. We will actively work for the isolation of neo Nazism and the murderous elements in Ukraine, in Greece and Europe.

After the dissolution of Yugoslavia another tragedy strikes at the heart of Europe.

Holding the presidency of the EU, the Greek government, could have engaged in actions that would encourage social and economic justice, securing the territorial integrity of the country and the security of all its citizens, among them the 100.000 Diaspora Greeks. On the contrary, the Greek government does whatever possible in order to affirm that the only "medicine" for Ukraine will be the IMF and NATO for a new "impoverishment recipe" for its people. Really, to what extent is this related to the political dependency and intertwining of the government with the borrowers?

The current Greek Memorandum government has been in the forefront of legitimizing the contemporary status quo in Ukraine. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Venizelos is obliged to listen to the reasonable worries and fears of the Greeks in Ukraine, to act accordingly and stop accusing SYRIZA for small politics. We ask the Greek government to do the obvious.

1. Not to condone a government in Ukraine that plays with fire and consorts with anomy, violence and neonazism.

2. To call the Greek ambassador for consultations and take all the necessary diplomatic, legal and institutional measures for the protection of the Greek minority of Ukraine.  This is mostly urgent because the Constitution, which is the source of protection for minorities, has ceased to apply.

3. Take all possible actions on a legal, diplomatic and institutional level in order to facilitate the democratic decision of the Ukrainian people on its future, in conditions of peace and democracy, without foreign interference and patrons.
