Question to the European Commission by the SYRIZA - Progressive Alliance MEPs on the multi-law bill that privatizes water

The Europarliament group of SYRIZA - Progressive Alliance submitted a question to the European Commission regarding the multi-law bill of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, which allegedly opens the door on the privatization of water, following the initiative of MEP Petros Kokkalis, Member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee. The question is co-signed by the vice-president of the European Parliament Dimitris Papadimoulis as well as all the MEPs of SYRIZA P.A. Kostas Arvanitis, Alexis Georgoulis, Stelios Kouloglou and Elena Kountoura.

In their question, SYRIZA P.A. MEP are focusing on the character of the public good and the basic right that water has for humans. They are also setting the existing context of climate change, which is also affecting Greece, with alternating floods and droughts. Finally, they are also raising the issue of the trend recorded within the EU for renationalisation, in terms of the management of goods such as water. In addition, they are referring to the absence of substantial consultation regarding the bill, which came to the Greek Parliament for discussion and voting, with the government’s obvious aim to find a way to circumvent the recent decision of the Legal Council of State that forfeits the Joint Ministerial Decision for free pricing of water by local providers.
